Have you ever put together a picture puzzle with a large number of small pieces? The first thing I do is spread out all the pieces on a table before me, right side up. Then I try sorting all the pieces of a similar color together and start putting those pieces together. After this I connect the color groups together. Finally I fill in the remaining pieces. This is a tedious process, but the end result is worth it.
I would like to share with you a Bible study approach that is similar to putting a picture puzzle together. I call it the “4S” or 4 step approach. After reading a portion or chapter of the Bible follow the same procedure. First, Identify and spread out all the facts in the portion before you. Write them out. Then, sort related facts together and give each group a descriptive title. After this, structure the material by organizing the facts in each group and organizing the groups into a logical sequence. When you’ve done this, determine the overall theme or title growing out of the outline you’ve developed. Finally, summarize what you’ve discovered by developing some personal applications to your life.
For our next visit I encourage you to read Acts 2:42-47 a number of times. Write out the facts you find and spread them out before you. We’ll begin sorting these facts and structure them into an outline. To help you study the Bible download the free Bible study booklet listed on the Home page.
