In recent visits we’ve looked at how Paul used athletic word pictures to share with other believers how he lived his life. It was a life of purpose, persistence and passion. And as he shared he invited those who were listening or reading to join with others in following his example. He implied in Philippians 3:17 that there were those in the church who were following his example. His challenge was to notice and follow them. His point is this, any church that wants to fulfill their mission will need to have those who by their example function as models and mentors. Others in the church should take notice of them and follow in their footsteps. Those who faithfully do this will become models themselves and be able to function as mentors. A logical question to ask would be, “What does it take to be a good Christian mentor?” Let me suggest three things that characterize them: 1. A good Christian mentor is properly motivated, 2. Practices what he preaches, and 3. Encourages others to follow his example as he follows Jesus. Let’s amplify these points further by reflecting on what Paul says in Philippians 3. What does it mean to be properly motivated? Let me begin by saying, implied in the book of Philippians is the conviction that we should make sure we are a Christian. By that I mean, we have realized our need of a Savior and have trusted in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. Paul describes how this happened to him in Philippians 3:1-12. Read and reflect on what Paul said and then ask yourself if something similar has happened to you.
