As we have amplified the three points we identified under the topic, The Tragedy of Misused Privilege. We found that Solomon was an extremely gifted man and with the wisdom God gave him he accomplished a lot of good things. But compromises along the way began to entangle and then trip him up. He kept adding wives to his household and in addition, concubines to his harem.

1 Kings 11 describes what began to happen. “King Solomon…loved many foreign women…They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, ‘You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.’ Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love…and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God…So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord, he did not follow the Lord completely.”

What a tragedy of misused privilege! Solomon was wiser than anyone else, respected by neighbors far and wide, enjoyed abundant wealth beyond comprehension, yet let it all filter through his hands until he had virtually nothing left.

He apparently became harder and harder on his people to maintain all that he possessed. He began to go after those he feared opposed him. He was unable to help prepare his son Rehoboam for the challenge of succeeding him.

After he died his son did not take the counsel of Solomon’s advisors, rather he listened to his own self-indulgent friends. This led to a revolt. As predicted, his son lost ten tribes, and was left with only one.
