In our study of Timothy as found in the New Testament one character trait emerges as his strongest asset. Paul described it this way in Philippians 2:19-22: “I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon…I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know that Timothy has proved himself.”

I like the way the King James puts it: “I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.” Likeminded refers to focus. When he is in your presence you will get his undivided attention. This was not a discipline he exercised, this came naturally for him.

He was in many different situations over the years with Paul, tested by many different circumstances and people, and proven to be genuinely gracious. He was not demanding of others. In fact, Paul felt it necessary to remind churches to take good care of him when he visited because he would not look out for himself. This is why he sometimes got sick and needed to be encouraged to take a little wine for his stomach’s sake.

Paul gave him the ultimate compliment in 1st Timothy 6:11 by addressing him, “But you, man of God…” Yes, in spite of his tendency to be timid, his need for constant encouragement, his fear that because he was young others wouldn’t listen to him or follow his leadership, and his reputation for being sick, he nevertheless pressed on, was faithful in his work for God, and was recognized as a man of God.

Take heart by reflecting on his character portrait.
