We have been studying Psalm 139 using a devotional approach in which we tried to answer the question, what can we learn about God from this Psalm. We have learned God is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. He is also the creator.

In wisdom He used His omnipotence to create all that is, and most uniquely us as human beings. His creative genius is seen in how intricately He knit us together in our mother’s womb, woven together in the depths of the earth, fearfully and wonderfully made. With all the knowledge we have in the medical and scientific community we still do not fully understand all the mysteries of how the human being is put together.

The psalmist was right to worship and praise our creator, the Lord God Almighty. This Psalm begins with the fact He has searched me and knows me. He makes it clear He is interested in the details of my life. He has a plan for me. Yes, He wants a relationship with me.

This leads to the second question in our devotional study of Psalm 139: What does this Psalm teach us about man? It’s clear we were created as rational beings. God perceives our thoughts. In this we were created in God’s image, but our ability to think and comprehend is limited compared to God’s omniscience.

Man also has the ability to communicate. “Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.” He can share with others what He is thinking. He can think about God and his relationship with Him and communicate his thoughts in prayer or praise. More on this in our next visit.
