In our study today we come to a verse that is used by those who believe the church will be raptured before the tribulation. 1st Thessalonians 5:9 say, “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

They hold that wrath referred to here is when God pours out His wrath in judgment during the tribulation period. Since this is the time appointed by God for those who reject Him and are still alive during the tribulation period to suffer under this wrath, He removes those who believe in His Son first, prior to the tribulation period. They are not appointed for that wrath. Rather, they are promised the full salvation that Jesus Christ provided through His death on the cross.

According to verse 10, “He died for us so that, whether we are awake or sleep, we may live together with Him.” “Awake” refers to those who are alive.  “Sleep” refers to those who have died. Either way we “live together with him.”

For the Christian, he is never alone or forsaken. He is always in a win/win position. While alive, no matter what he may be facing, he lives together with Christ. And in death, he is immediately together with Christ. What words of encouragement these are. Do you believe them? Do you believe them for yourself? Do a reality check.

According to chapter 1, verse 10, the Thessalonian Christians served the living and true God and waited “for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead – Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.” This was a dynamic, freeing truth and great encouragement to them.
