Every once in a while I go back to Acts 6:1-7 to remind myself as a minister what my priorities should be. It is clear, the Apostles’ top priorities are found in verse 4, we will “give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

As the church was growing they experienced what often happens, the needs of some folk are overlooked, and this usually leads to complaining and dissention. When this happens leaders are generally considered responsible. They can do one of two things: roll up there sleeves and minister to those who have been overlooked or delegate that responsibility to others who are qualified to take care of the need.

Many leaders get caught in doing it themselves. It seems easier and it initially goes faster. It’s not that doing this is bad in itself, but it does distract you from staying focused on your priorities. And it often leads to burnout. It’s also not good for the church, because they tend to think the problem is getting solved and so they don’t need to be concerned about it. “Let others handle it,” becomes a common mantra in church life.

It is far better for those in ministry to find others to carry that part of the burden. Better yet, do what the Apostles did. They gathered the church and said to them, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them.”

We’ll see how wise this decision was in our next visit.
