In our last visit we studied Hezekiah’s prayer in Isaiah 37.  After praising God for who He is he presented a strong argument in prayer for God to deliver him and his people from the threat of Sennacherib, and in doing so, to vindicate His name and honor.

As soon as he finished his prayer it says in verse 21 and following, “Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, this is the word the Lord has spoken against him...’”  This is followed with a prophecy in which God says He would “defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.”

This promise was fulfilled that very night as “the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp.”  This devastation caused Sennacherib to break camp and return to Nineveh.  Soon after that he was killed while worshiping in the temple of his god.

What a dramatic answer to Hezekiah’s prayer.  Surely word spread rapidly to surrounding nations about what his God had done.  God’s name and honor was vindicated and God’s people were delivered.  Things happened just as Hezekiah had prayed.

God doesn’t always answer prayers as promptly or exactly as requested.  But He does promise to hear our prayers and though He might answer them at a time different than what we were expecting or in a way different than we anticipated, He often answers in a way that is abundantly above all we ask or think.
