In our last visit we began to study the experiences of King Hezekiah as described in Isaiah 36-39.  I suggested we could organize our thoughts under the three prayers mentioned in these chapters.

First there was Hezekiah’s request, asking Isaiah the prophet to pray, Isaiah 37:1-4.  Then you have the prayer Hezekiah offered in 37:14-20.  And finally you have his prayer, asking God to extend his life in 38:2-3.  Let’s look at each of these prayers separately.

When the Assyrian army was invading the land of Judah and approaching Jerusalem, a message was delivered by the commander of the army to the people of Jerusalem.  “When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord” (37:1).

Then he sent three of his court officials to Isaiah with this request: “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the point of birth and there is no strength to deliver them.  It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard.  Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives” (37:3-4).

God responded by promising to divert the Assyrian king and his commander from carrying out their threat.

Notice Hezekiah requested that the man of God, Isaiah, pray for them.  God didn’t rebuke him or ignore his concern.  In fact, God gave an answer before Isaiah even prayed!
