I would like for us to study together the experiences of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, described in Isaiah 36-39.

Hezekiah was one of the few kings who is described as doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord.  Great renewal took place during his 29 year reign.  In the 14th year of his reign God allowed his nation to be invaded by Sennacherib, king of Assyria.  Town after town was overrun by his armies.  Hezekiah turned to Isaiah to plead with God for help.  It was granted.

Before the commander of the Assyrian army left he sent Hezekiah a threatening letter.  When he received it he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord and prayed to God over it.  God assured him through Isaiah the prophet that He would intervene and deliver Jerusalem from this threat.  Then God sent the angel of the Lord to wipe out 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp.  Jerusalem was saved as were the people of God.

After this reprieve Hezekiah became ill.  Again he prayed about it and God promised to keep him alive for an additional 15 years.  Unfortunately, during those 15 years, he didn’t maintain his close walk with God and failed in a number of ways.  His was a great life, but he didn’t finish well.

Those are the basic facts described in the 4 chapters of Isaiah 36-39.  You can find more information on the reign of Hezekiah in 2 Kings 18-20 and 2 Chronicles 29-32.

As I reflected on these chapters I felt that we could consider the events described under three prayers and their outcomes.  Read over this material in preparation for this study.
