I believe all of the Old Testament prophets experienced times of disappointment and discouragement.  Consider Habakkuk who shared how he came to understand what God was really intending to do with the Israelites who were n  ot listening to God’s message nor responding positively to it.

He was disappointed with God, who to Habakkuk was tolerating evil, injustice and rebellion.  He complained to God and after God explained what He was doing, he argued with God.  God’s answer didn’t fit his theology.  Rather than throw in the towel He determined to get alone and wait to see what God would say to him.

It’s not clear how long he waited, but God finally answered him and expanded on His plan to discipline Israel by using ruthless, ungodly Babylonian military hoards. This would happen at an appointed time, and God made it clear, He would not be late.  The key is to live by faith in God’s faithfulness.  God will justly deal with Babylon as well.  He concludes by declaring, “The Lord is in his holy temple, let all the earth be silent before him!”

Finally, Habakkuk got the point and accepted it.  By faith he prayed, “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord.  Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”  He essentially said, “I accept that you are just to act in wrath against Israel, but as you do what is righteous, remember to be merciful.  You did this many times in the past.  Please do it again in our day?”

This change in his perspective recalibrated his mind and heart set.  Now, whatever happened around him he by faith found his joy and strength in the Lord.  He would go on in victory.
