In our study of Acts 20:17-21:1 we’ve considered Paul’s manner and message.  Let’s turn our attention to his mission.

Paul shares his mission in verse 24: “I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”  He pictured his mission as a race.  It started when he allowed Jesus to take control over his life.

Ananias relayed God’s mission to Paul in Acts 9:15-16, “This man is my chosen 13instrument to carry my name before the Gentles and their kings and before the people of Israel.  I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”  From that day forward this was his race.  His task was to testify to the gospel of God’s grace to Jew and Gentile, common people and kings, slaves or freemen.  He was committed to completing this task.

As Paul relentlessly carried out his task he took responsibility to reach everyone with this good news.  In his farewell address he declared, “I am innocent of the blood of all men.”  He took seriously what God told Ezekiel, “I have made you a watchman…When I say to a wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood” (Ezekiel 3:17-18).

His mission was not to change people.  Rather, he was to warn them and show them the way to peace with God.  He knew God was fully responsible for the outcome of his obedience.
