We've focused in recent visits on the insensitivity of the disciples toward others as well as toward their own weakness and vulnerability.

That was bad enough, but worse yet was their insensitivity toward their Master, Jesus, as described in Mark 14:32-42. He shared with them in the Garden of Gethsemane, "Sit here while I pray." Then, taking Peter, James and John along with Him, being deeply distressed and troubled, He shared with them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch."

After going further into the garden and praying He returned to find the disciples sleeping. He warned them to "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." Three times He prayed by Himself, and each time the disciples fell asleep. He had shared His heart and they insensitively ignored His plea to watch, and fell asleep. How tragic.

This one who had cared so deeply for them and their welfare, now saw His disciples fall asleep on the job. That kind of insensitivity inevitably leads to failure in our walk with the Lord. It is true, as Jesus said in vs. 29, "The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." All of us have experienced this at one time or another. But it's no excuse.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, our Savior. He gave His all for us. He was and always is faithful. He is worthy of our devotion and discipline to stand true to Him and for Him in the crunch.

If we don't, He will nevertheless continue to triumph in His mission, as He did then, but we will hang our heads in shame having missed the opportunity to honor and glorify Him.
