In our last visit we worked on a "4S" (step) study of Mark 11. After spreading out the details found in this chapter we sorted the information into three groups and structured them into an outline: Title : God's plan exposed and fulfilled. Three points: praise, prayer and power.

Let's amplify this outline. Praise is primarily found in the procession as Jesus rode on a donkey from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem. They praised Him by what they did: "spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches cut in the fields." This was customarily done when welcoming a king or conqueror.

They praised Him with shouts of "Hosanna!" a Hebrew expression meaning, "Save!" Since they quoted from the Old Testament in their praise, it implies their expectations were building and the Holy Spirit was preparing them for this event.

Jesus knew the time had come for the climax of His mission. This event set the stage for that to happen. When the people responded with praise He readily accepted and affirmed their praise. He thus identified Himself as the Savior who had been promised from of old, namely, the Messiah!

When such genuine praise burst forth, it's not surprising there were those who responded to what was taking place very differently. They were critical of those who were praising Jesus as well as of Jesus who was accepting and affirming their praise. To them this display was blasphemous. There was a power struggle developing.

What we learn from this is that there often is a price to pay when you publicly and unashamedly praise and worship God in word and deed.
