Jesus understood what He talked about to others. When He said in Mark 6:31, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest," He was sharing what He made a practice of doing: getting alone with His Father in a quiet place, free from distraction.

In Mark 1:35 it says, "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Time with His Father refreshed Him. Again in Mark 6:46 we read, "After leaving them, he went up on a mountain side to pray." This is how He maintained margin in His life. This is how He avoided stress, even though His life had more demands on it than most anyone else.

I have often reminded myself of this impact statement and tried scheduling time to relax, alone, rest and relate to my Lord in prayer and reflecting on His Word. When I haven't done this I have at times ended up ill and in bed. I can remember once when I ended up in the hospital. There is no need for this, because Jesus gave us this impact statement, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

I don't think I'll ever forget this impact statement. I didn't even have to work at memorizing it. That's how indelibly it impacted my life.

When reading your Bible, keep your eyes open for impact statements. Make sure you check out the context to be sure you're not misunderstanding what God intended in what He said. Once you've checked it out, ask God to impact your life with the truth in the statement. That's how you grow, through reading and studying God's Word, spending time with your Lord in a quiet, restful place.
