In our last visit we began to amplify the first point in our outline: there are things to flee. We should flee the evil desires of youth, even if we are not young anymore. Another thing to flee is resentfulness, mentioned in 2nd Timothy 2:24.

When trying to be useful to God in helping others it is easy to get caught up in arguments and quarrels. Sometimes those who attack us actually get more of a following than we do. Or, people you help might thanklessly leave you and follow others. It is easy to get resentful when such things happen. Pity parties drain and derail you from carrying out your assignments for God. Flee resentment or it will destroy you. Paul declares there are some things you should run away from.

There are other things you should pursue. Let’s discover what they are in 2nd Timothy 2:22-26: “Righteousness, faith, love and peace.” These are found in the cluster of the fruit of the Spirit.

Righteousness involves your standing with God when you trust in Jesus. It also should be seen in your behavior, by doing what is right. “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6). Faith either removes obstacles or overcomes them. Love also overcomes in that it covers a multitude of sins and Paul says it never fails. Peace includes peace with God, peace in our own hearts and peace with others.

All of this is a huge challenge, so join others “who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (verse 22). Notice the connection between prayer and purity. We need each other in accountability relationships to be faithful in pursuing these things.
