After declaring he saw with his own eyes the magnificence of Christ’s transfiguration Peter goes on to say in 2nd Peter 1:17-18, Christ “received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.”

Commentator Lumby explains: “Of all places to which special sanctity would be ascribed by Christ’s followers, surely that would be the first to be so marked where the most solemn testimony was given to the divinity of Jesus Christ. To the Jewish Christian this would rank with Sinai, and no name would be more fitly applied to it than that which had so constantly been given to a place on which God first revealed Himself in His glory. ‘The holy mount of God’ (Ezekiel 28:14) would now receive another application, and he would see little of the true continuity of God’s revelation who did not connect readily the old and new covenants, and give to the place where the glory of Christ was most eminently shown forth the same name which was applied so often to Sinai.”

It was there on that holy mountain where Peter saw Christ’s divine magnificence and heard the thundering affirmation of God’s voice from heaven. These were indelibly imprinted on his mind and heart. Yet this was not his greatest basis for authority.

Experience is often hard to describe, and with time the details of your experience fade. Next visit we’ll discover a surer way to certainty.
