The closing chapter of 1st Timothy focuses on contentment.  In our materialistic society it is easy to become discontent with things as they are in our lives, so what advice does Paul give?

Let’s do a chapter study of 1st Timothy 6.  To start with, let’s give the chapter a title: “Godliness with Contentment.”  I chose verses 6-7 as the key for understanding this chapter: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.  But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”

Paul put this so succinctly as a summary of what is in the chapter I can’t improve on it.  The only point I would add is that if God has blessed us with wealth we should find ways to bless others with it.

The main question I would have in reflecting on this chapter is this, why is it so easy for us to focus on the material/temporal things of life over against the spiritual/eternal?  Problems in this chapter were primarily in the opening verses on masters and slaves.  Another problem for some would be: if God has given me the gift of giving should I pursue wealth in order to be able to give more.

After further reflection I came up with the following outline: under the title – Godliness with Contentment – I came up with the following main points:

1. The pursuit of wealth.

2. The purpose of wealth.

3. The priority of true life over wealth.

Let me encourage you to find sub points under each of these main points in preparation for our next visit, and I will share the sub points I came up with.
