In our last visit we noted in 1st Timothy 4:8 the importance of endeavoring to stay healthy physically so we can apply ourselves to godliness and God’s work.  That is to make the most out of our life here on earth.  But more importantly, training to be godly “has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

Timothy was enjoined by Paul to command and teach these things.  Some who are older and beginning to feel the aging process might look down on a healthier and more enthusiastic young person challenging them.  That’s why Paul wrote Timothy: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.”  Rather, commit yourself afresh to “set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Silence the critics by modeling an exemplary life.  Then keep on doing what God has gifted you to do in private and in the public arena.  “Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.”

The Christian life is never static.  You are either progressing in growing more Christ-like or drifting away from Him.  It’s not just a matter of obedience, however.  You can’t make this happen on your own initiative and effort.  You must depend on God to enable you, as Paul wrote in Philippians 2:13, “it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.”

The hymn writer was right when he wrote: “Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus than to trust and obey.”  Trust God to guide and enable you, then cooperate with Him by obeying what He guides you to do.
