It may surprise you that the name Jesus was in common use for boys in the first century – much as Tom, Bob or Bill are used today.  To some the name Jesus merely represents the human form of the One who is the Savior of the world.  But when true Christians use the name, they’re referring to the unique human being born in Bethlehem, who grew up in a little village called Nazareth.

This name Jesus is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew name Joshua, which means, “God is my Savior” or “Jehovah is my salvation.”  This is why Joseph and Mary were instructed to give the name to the child born to them.  He was to save His people from their sins.  Freely translated, Jesus means “God is my salvation.”  When you put the name and the title together – as Jesus Christ or as Christ Jesus – you have: “My salvation is found in the promised anointed One!”

Listen to how Matthew describes this in 1:18-21: “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.  Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.  But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
