In our last visit we found Gideon discovering that His Lord was Jehovah-shalom, the Lord is Peace.  To commemorate that experience he built an altar, calling it, The Lord is Peace, Jehovah-shalom.  With Peace in his heart he set out to be the mighty warrior God told him he was.

It’s true; he kept on wanting assurances that he clearly understood God’s will, by putting out a fleece, as a test.  God knew his heart and confirmed his call.  In a unique way God reduced the number of men joining Gideon in the assault on the Midianites to just 300 men.  The odds were so great against Gideon and his men that the victory over the enemy had to bring glory to God, because it couldn’t have happened unless God did it.

God doesn’t put us into situations where the odds are overwhelmingly against us in order to distress us.  He does this so that we know we are mighty warriors only in the strength of the Lord.  He gives us peace when we trust and obey in spite of the odds, so that He gets the glory.

The Jehovah-shalom of the Old Testament is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ of the New Testament.  Often Jesus pronounced a blessing of peace over people.  Paul declared: “He himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14).

Jesus promised in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  He said this just days before His crucifixion, knowing the cross ultimately would bring peace to trusting hearts.  Yes, to win in battle, we need the peace of God to rule in our hearts.
