Genesis 22:14 says, “Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide (Jehovah-Jireh), as it is said to this day, ‘In the mount of the Lord it will be provided’”

Abraham had often stepped out by faith to do something God asked him to do.  And without exception God faithfully provided what was necessary for him to carry out the mission.  Any promises God made were always fulfilled.  At times, however, Abraham did not step out by faith in obedience.  Even in those cases God remained faithful to him.  The most notable incident was when Abraham had Ishmael by Hagar rather than wait to have a son by Sarah as God had promised.  In spite of Abraham’s disbelief God provided what He had promised.

When Isaac, the promised son, became a young man, God asked Abraham to sacrifice him up to the Lord.  By that time Abraham had come to realize God would remain faithful and “provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering” (Genesis 22:8).  With that confidence, obedience was Abraham’s difficult but faithful response.  The drama moves to a climax when God at the last moment stops Abraham from killing his son.  At that precise moment God supplies a ram caught nearby in a thicket by his horns.  The ram was just what Abraham needed to culminate his sacrificial offering of praise to the Lord.

Was it coincidental that the timing worked out as it did?  No! Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord Will Provide, was behind it all, revealing Himself as the faithful provider of all His people need to obey Him.  All we need to do is Trust and Obey!
