Let’s consider another name for God.  In Genesis 17:1-2 God declares to Abraham, “I am God Almighty (El Shaddai); walk before me, and be blameless.  And I will establish my covenant between me and you.”  This is the first time God reveals Himself as El Shaddai, The Almighty.

He had previously established a covenant of blessing with Abraham, but thus far the most important part of the covenant remained unfulfilled.  And the possibility of its being fulfilled was diminishing every passing day.  Abraham’s body at ninety-nine years of age was nearly dead insofar as reproducing powers were concerned, and Sarah’s womb was now definitely dead.  But with God who is Almighty what are such minor hindrances?

Abraham was told to walk before God in a blameless way – that would include trusting God for the fulfillment of His promise.  If Abraham kept himself in the place and posture where God could bless him, God, The Almighty, would in His time do His part.  El Shaddai always does.

Dr. Scofield noted some additional facts about this name for God.  The Hebrew word, Shad, used to refer to a woman’s breast, would indicate God is one who nourishes, satisfies or gives strength.  “All sufficient” captures the idea best.  In addition the name suggests enriching or making fruitful.

Interestingly, this name is mentioned 31 times in the book of Job.  God desires to make us more fruitful by at times chastening or pruning us (John 15:2).  The hand of El Shaddai fell on Job, the best man of his time, not in judgment, but in purifying his life unto greater fruitfulness.
