In our last visit we began to focus on what Paul taught about grace in the book of Galatians.  We saw something of the dynamic of God’s grace.  Now let’s consider the possible dangers associated with grace.  You heard me right, there are dangers associated with grace.

God’s grace at times seems almost too good to be true.  Has that ever crossed your mind?  Think about it.  The Christians Paul was writing experienced God’s grace when they heard and responded to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  They were set free from the bondage of the law, of sin and self.  Paul said in Galatians 5:7, “You were running a good race.”

But the whole reason he was writing this book was that something happened. They set aside the grace of God and were fallen away from grace” (Galatians 2:21, 5:4).  Paul said in Galatians 1:6, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – which is no gospel at all.”

What happened is there were false teachers who came to them and told them that they had to be circumcised if they really wanted to be saved and OK with God.  Paul points out that if that were true then what Christ did on the cross was not sufficient and Christ died for nothing.

If we think that our salvation or growth in our Christian life is dependent on our performance then we are turning to another gospel, which is not the gospel of Christ.

Salvation is a free gift to be received by faith.  Growth as a Christian is also a free gift to be received by faith.  It’s dangerous to think otherwise.
