In our last visit we began to amplify the outline we constructed based on the information we collected on the subject of “Cultivating a Joyful Spirit.”  This material was found in Paul’s epistle to the Philippians.  We amplified the first main point on finding joy through fellowship.

Let’s continue by looking at Philippians 2:29-30, where Paul indicates that there is joy when a church welcomes a faithful servant into their midst.  They were to welcome an individual like Epaphroditus, who was a fellow worker, sent by this church to take care of some needs Paul had.  “Welcome him in the Lord with great joy,” Paul says, “and honor men like him.”  He had risked “his life to make up for the help you could not give me.”  When that kind of person comes home to his church, battle scared but alive there is every reason to express honor and great joy.

Paul also reminds the church in Philippians 4:10, “I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me.  Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.”  What he was referring to was their financial support in the past.

They considered their partnership as fellowship.  They missed Paul.  They wanted to show their support but something kept them from being able to do what they wanted.  Maybe because of Paul’s travels contact with him had been lost.  Or maybe they, who lived in an economically depressed area, had fallen on harder times so that they could not help.  Whatever, contact had been renewed and that brought Paul great joy, and I’m sure to them as well.
