Today I would like for us to start a study of the book of James in the New Testament. Let me encourage you to read it through a few times over the next few days and then follow along as we study it together.

As you read James you will recognize its similarity to Proverbs in the Old Testament and it has many similarities to the Sermon on the Mount as well. It is concerned with our behavior as much as our belief. James focuses on some areas of behavior that are common weak spots in the lives of Christians and shows how to cope with them. He, himself, modeled his message in his life.

Who was James? What does the New Testament have to say about him? Let’s do a biographical study of his life to begin our study of the book he wrote. To do this we will collect information on his life, correlate it into an outline, then crystallize what we learn into some personal applications. You will need to use a concordance to collect the information.

When I did this and reflected on the information I gathered I came up with the following three points:

     1. James, before becoming a Christian;
     2. James, becoming a Christian;
     3. James, as a mature Christian.

If you are a Christian you could use this outline to prepare your own personal testimony. This would help you be prepared to share with others in a clear, concise way what God has done for you. Try doing this on a single sheet of paper, with just enough information that someone hearing it or reading it would know what to do if they wanted to become a Christian themselves. I would enjoy reading it if you would send it to me.
