As we continue to wrap up our study of the book of Habakkuk let’s underline one of the most basic lessons to learn from our study. We will never gain sufficient understanding and wisdom to lead others if we don’t cultivate an authentic personal relationship with God through talking and listening to him in prayer.

In our last visit we emphasized the relevance of God’s Word to our lives today. As we read and study God’s Word He will speak to us. As we ponder what He says we might not understand how what He says will work itself out in our lives. At times we might be confused because we only see a small part of what God is doing and planning. When that happens talk to Him in prayer about your questions and concerns.

You can be candid in your prayers – God can handle it. He is patient. But listen carefully when He guides you to Scripture that will shed light on your concerns. I say this because we tend to hear only what we’re looking for, not necessarily all God wants us to know. This is what leads to confusion. Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if you are confused.

It’s in this kind of honest interaction between you and God that an authentic relationship is established and cultivated. In my own life there are Scriptures I’ve studied and even memorized. Then after a period of time and in different circumstances I’ve looked at them again only to see something I’d never noticed before. It’s God’s way of nurturing an authentic personal relationship with you.

God promised in Psalm 1 to bless the one who follows this pursuit to know Him and His will better.
