In our last visit we looked at the focus Habakkuk had as he prayed and complained to God.  He was focused on his own life, on his family, on his faith community, on the community he lived in, on his country.

If we were in a similar situation we might add to this list, our church and the church worldwide.  This is a focus we should have, but as Jesus once taught, there are people beyond this focus.  God’s focus includes those beyond our boundaries, physically, socially and spiritually.

The goal of Habakkuk’s prayer was to have God straighten out what he was concerned about.  This personal concern was legitimate, but provincial.  God had a greater goal.  He didn’t just want to be glorified by His chosen people.  He wanted to fill the earth “with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Habakkuk 2:14).  As He dwells in His holy temple He wants all the earth to in silence recognize and acknowledge Him for Who He is (2:20).  Ultimately God’s goal is to have all His creatures trust in Him no matter their circumstances.

Most of us have a hard time trusting God for everything even when things are going well for us.  It’s more difficult to trust Him when things aren’t coming together as hoped for.  What about when everything is decimated?

Listen to how the prophet responded to his circumstances: “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (Habakkuk 3:17-18).

Are you at a place like that, yet?
