In our biographical study of the life of Barnabas as seen in the New Testament we first collected all the information we could find about his life.  Then we correlated this information into an outline.  Actually we developed two outlines.  First, we did an historical portrait which emphasized his life experiences.  Second, we did a character analysis which emphasized the qualities of his character.

Now we are ready for the third step, crystallize what you have learned into some personal, practical applications.

The applications I drew from this study are the following:

Barnabas was not a perfect man (he got very angry in his disagreement with Paul over John Mark), but he left an indelible imprint on the life of the early church and on its leaders.  Never let a failure keep you from tackling new opportunities.

He modeled the life of a true discipler (II Timothy 2:2).  He was always working at helping others realize their full potential.  He rejoiced when others were experiencing the blessing of God in their lives, even if it overshadowed him.  He realized he couldn’t keep doing indefinitely all he wanted to do for God, so he reproduced himself and multiplied and extended his ministry through others.

He was always encouraging others to keep the work of God going forward.

Barnabas has been my Biblical mentor for most of my life.  I have tried to model my life after his example.  I believe the church today needs more men like Barnabas.  Reflect long on his life and follow his example.
