We’ve been studying in Romans 8 what Paul teaches about God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  Now consider what Paul says about man in this chapter, both unsaved and saved persons.

Since all start as unsaved let’s consider that first.  The most profound truth on this is found in verse 9: “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”  If you don’t belong to Christ you are without God in your life.  According to verse 5 the unsaved person lives according to the sinful nature.  Their minds are set on what that nature desires.

Then verse 6 says, “The mind of sinful man is death.”  Verse 7 indicates that “the sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.”  Verse 8 declares, “Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.”  If this is all true it shouldn’t surprise us why Paul concluded the opening section of Romans with the well-known verse; “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  And later in Romans 6:23, “The wages of sin is death.”

Left to ourselves we are spiritually bankrupt and totally incapable of meeting God’s standard.  We’re separated from God, unable to please Him and in desperate need of His salvation, which He offers us because He loves us.  He wants us to turn to Him by faith.

If you have never taken that step of commitment by faith, let me encourage you to do so now.  If you have, thank God for His grace and seek to live for His glory.
