According to Romans 8 Jesus Christ’s present ministry for the believer is twofold.  He indwells us and He intercedes for us.

One of the great themes of Paul’s epistles is “Christ in me, the hope of glory.”  What we can’t do by our own effort, “Christ in me” can and does accomplish.  It is the Holy Spirit who makes the presence of “Christ in me” a glorious reality.  I am never alone (John 14:15-18).  He is not just before me, or beside me, or behind me, or under me or above me, though all of those statements are true.  He is within me!  He is my life.

At the same time it is also true that He is at God the Father’s right hand. That is a place of honor and privilege.  What is He doing there?  According to Romans 8:34 “Christ Jesus…is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”

He so fully identified with us in His humanity that He understands experientially what we are going through.  So when He intercedes for us it is not a theoretical exercise.  “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16).

When He intercedes for me He makes available God’s infinite ability to overcome my limitations.  Take courage and comfort from that.
