In our study today let’s amplify further what Paul says in Romans 1. Verse 18 says the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against ungodly and wicked men because they suppress the truth by their wickedness. The truth they suppress is “God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature,” which are seen and understood by all from what has been made. This is natural revelation. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Paul says, what was self-evident was suppressed. How? Verses 21-25 say, “Although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him,” rather, they “exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles…They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the creator.” Verse 28 continues, “Furthermore…they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God.”
Notice the downward regression. Men refuse to bow and worship in humility and awe the One who created all things and exchange what is revealed to representations of what was created. They then worship what was created instead of the Creator. Finally, men don’t consider it worthwhile to retain any vestige of the knowledge of God. This leads to God hating, verse 30, and arrogant thumbing of their noses at God’s righteous decrees.
In our next study we’ll see how this suppressing and distorting of truth plays out in society.
