There are two powerful statements found in Zechariah 4, verses 6 and 10.  I call them, Impact Statements!  Listen to them: “‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty,” and, “Who despises the day of small things?”  Let’s check to see if these Impact Statements are supported by the context in which they’re found.

As Zerubbabel led the people of Israel in rebuilding the temple he faced daunting odds, and the progress seemed, oh, so small.  Through him God was saying, if you rely on human resources the task will be insurmountable.  “Not by might,” focuses on the resources of many people combined.  “Power,” suggests a charismatic, powerful leader.  Either of these, or a combination of both is not enough.  God was saying, “Don’t rely on the ability or charisma of a leader to provide power.  Don’t rely on an army of people.  That won’t get the job done.  It might seem like you’re making very little progress.  Others might laugh sarcastically at how small what you’re doing appears.  God, through His prophet, was saying, “All I’m asking of you is simply trust and obey.  Obey what I’ve told you.  Rely on the supply of my Spirit.  It’s in the enabling power of my Spirit that you will accomplish what I have in mind.  Anything I’m doing is significant!”

Keep that in mind as you go about living for God, serving Him in whatever task He assigns.  Leave the results with Him and you will not be disappointed.  That’s what God promises.
