As mentioned in our previous visit the Gospel of Luke was thoroughly researched by Dr. Luke and authenticated by the early church as being inspired by God.  There have been those who were skeptical of its historical accuracy.

Luke anticipated and addressed this issue by including what was happening in the larger world, mentioning historical details throughout the book.  The Moody Bible Commentary says, “Luke was not just trying to provide a chronology of the events he recorded, but he also was saying in effect, ‘The matters of which I am writing have a place in the larger narrative of world history.’”

In chapter one verse five it says, “In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest…” mixing the spiritual with the political situation.  Then in Chapter two it begins, “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)”  This fact is important because Jesus was conceived while Mary was in Nazareth, but was born in Bethlehem as predicted by the prophet Micah.  Again, in chapter three it says: “In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar – when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea,” and then it lists other political leaders in the region, as well as the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas.

Emphasizing the historical context lends authenticity to the account and that provides confidence for our faith.
