Today let’s consider the importance of being timely in what we say as we pursue being Christ-like in our communication skills.  At times we say things impulsively.  We have seen in our study in Proverbs that restraining ourselves and keeping quiet is wise.  When we do, often other opportunities open to say what we wanted to say.  The discerning person knows when it’s the right time to speak.  They’ll also know the appropriate thing to say.

As this happens we experience what Proverbs 15:23 says, “A man finds joy in giving an apt reply – and how good is a timely word!  Proverbs 25:11-12 amplifies this as follows in the New Living Bible: “Timely advice is as lovely as golden apples in a silver basket.  Valid criticism is as treasured by the one who heeds it as jewelry made from finest gold.”  This is what is sometimes referred to as “the teachable moment.”

“The tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21).  When Christ spoke, His words were life to those who listened and received them.  They embodied truth which freed people from the bondage of error.  They gave hope to the despairing, light to those who groped aimlessly in darkness, and confidence to those who obeyed.

As we practice what we’ve learned in Proverbs we’ll become more like Jesus in our communication skills.
