As we continue our study of what Proverbs says about communication skills Proverbs 18:20 is a key verse for this theme: “The tongue has the power of life and death.”

It reminds me of James 3:3-6: “When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.  Or take ships…Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder.  Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts…a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

Put positively, a bit in the mouth of a horse can make the horse go in the right direction.  A very small rudder can steer a large ship through a raging storm to a desired mooring place.  A small spark can ignite a fire to warm us and provide heat for cooking a meal.

There is power in the tongue, though it’s a very small member in our bodies.  It has power to give life by saying something positive and encouraging.  It also has power to destroy and bring death by spouting criticism, curses, slander, and lies.

My prayer is that we can learn together how to make a positive impact by learning healthy communication skills from our study of Proverbs.
