As we continue our chapter study of Proverbs 3 let me remind you of the reasons why we should trust in the Lord with all our heart: He promises you a full life and lovingly disciplines you to keep you in line with His purposes.  He knows what you’re facing and offers what you’ll need to get through it.  Don’t try doing it alone.

This leads us to amplifying the second point in our outline: “Lean not on your own understanding.”  This does not mean you shouldn’t try figuring things out and develop some strategies to succeed.  Verse one declares, “do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.”

Understanding is based on remembering facts you’ve been taught.  In verses 13-18 he continues by encouraging you to find wisdom and gain understanding.  Why?  Because when you acquire wisdom and understanding they will be for you “more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.  She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.  Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.  Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.  She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.”

But when you increase in wisdom and understanding, don’t brag about it.  Verse 7 warns, “Do not be wise in your own eyes.”  Humbly admit they are gifts from God.
