In recent visits we’ve considered a few illustrations that might help us better understand some of what is covered in Proverbs 3.  Now let’s look at some additional cross references.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  God directs our path by enlightening us about where we’re now standing and giving us insight about where we should be heading.  In Matthew 6:33 Jesus said, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”  All of our “next steps” should be governed by doing what is right or righteous, as well as what would further His kingdom.  Colossians 3:17 declares, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Remember, when “Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil,” His response to each of the devil’s temptations was, “It is written,” then He gave an appropriate Biblical answer to overcome it.  Knowing the Bible is so important to be prepared for whatever we encounter in life.

Cross references enhance our understanding of what we are studying as well as helping us see how what we’re discovering can be applied to our lives.  You can find cross references listed in the margins in many Bibles, or you can use a concordance.  It takes time to do such research in pursuing getting God’s message, but the effort is worth it.
