The poet Whittier wrote, “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, it might have been.”  Jeremiah agrees.  Listen to a brief, poignant impact statement in Jeremiah 8:20: “The harvest is past, the summer has ended and we are not saved.”

As I reflected on it I rephrased it as an impact thought, the tragedy of missed opportunity!  Let the truth of this verse sink in: “The harvest is past, the summer has ended and we are not saved.”

During the spring you have opportunity everywhere to plow, plant, cultivate, and get things ready for an anticipated harvest.  During the summer opportunity starts ebbing away.  If you don’t plant early enough you won’t get a crop.  If you don’t cultivate, and if you don’t weed, the crop will be minimized.  When harvest has passed, opportunity ends.

Let me repeat that outline again: Opportunity everywhere, opportunity ebbing, opportunity ended.  We have seen this truth before in our study.  Don’t put off seeking the Lord for salvation.  As Isaiah, declared, “Seek Him while He may be found.”  I hope it will never be too late for you.  I hope it will never be said regarding your life, “The harvest is past, the summer has ended and we are not saved.”

I trust you’ll turn to Christ and be saved by God’s grace today.  If you already know God personally, be sure to share with loved ones and friends how they can find God.  Otherwise they’ll experience the tragedy of missed opportunity.
