I trust that as you’ve been reading the book of Isaiah you haven’t gotten bogged down.  If you’ve been reading consistently, you should be at about chapter 35.  For the next few days I’m going to focus on Isaiah 37:14-20.  There is much to learn from Hezekiah’s prayer after he received threats from Sennacharib, king of Assyria.

Take the information found in the prayer, spread it out in front of you, then sort it into groups and structure it into an outline.  Then summarize it into some applications and apply them to your life.  Fortunately, you’ll discover, the information almost sorts itself into an outline.  Notice how it develops.

First, he affirms truth about God: “Oh, Lord Almighty, God of Israel, enthroned between the Cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth.  You have made heaven and earth.”  He is lifting God up; affirming truth about Him.

Then he gives an accurate assessment of devastating circumstances: “Give ear, Oh Lord, and hear.  Open your eyes, Oh Lord and see.  Listen to all the words Sennacharib has sent to insult the Living God.  It is true, Oh Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these people and their lands.  They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.”  He made an accurate assessment of Israel’s plight.

In our next visit we’ll look at his appeal to God for deliverance.  We can learn how to pray more effectively by reflecting on his prayer.
