In our project of “reading through the Bible in two years,” we’ll start today to look at the Book of Ecclesiastes; a book that looks on life from the human perspective.  It was written by Solomon who wrote the book of Proverbs and the Song of Solomon.  Here are his thoughts on life from a human perspective.  His insights emerge from his experience and observation.

I remember after James Aldrin became the second man to step on the moon, he described what he saw there as a “magnificent desolation.”  Life viewed from a human perspective might also be described as a “magnificent desolation.”  Solomon felt life was empty, unproductive, and unprofitable.  It is a meaningless world-wind that viciously flings us around at will.  Why get serious if death inevitably strips us of all we gain by effort?

From the divine perspective, however, we can see that God is at work in our world.  He brings meaning and usefulness into life.  That is why we are counseled in Ecclesiastes 12:1 to “Remember your creator in the days of your youth.”   Before the drudgery of daily duties disillusions us, we must get the right perspective on life.

Let me encourage you to cultivate your consciousness of God’s Presence.  Remember, He knows your every thought, hears your every word and sees your every deed.  He also knows the consequences of your activities on yourself and others.  Then order your life accordingly.  That’s the way to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in life.
