As we saw in our last visit, the book of Proverbs emphasizes two major themes that are inter-related: the fear of the Lord and wisdom.  In Proverbs 1:7 it says, having a reverential fear of the Lord, that is, respect for Him as the Sovereign Lord of all, is the beginning of knowledge.  This leads to understanding and wisdom.

Wisdom is essential if we are to make the most of life and live responsibly before God.  In fact, as you look at Proverbs chapter one this focus is amplified as follows: we need to exercise wisdom in our homes.  Proverbs 1:8-9 declares, “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”  It is also necessary in our community, “Wisdom calls aloud in the street” (verse 20).  In our politics, wisdom “raises her voice in the public square.”  In our society, “at the head of the noisy streets she cries out” (verse 21).  In our business, “in the gates of the city she makes her speech” (verse 20).  In our personal lives, “whoever listens to (wisdom) will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” (verse 33).

If our society is ever going to be turned to righteousness, justice and purity of life we will need to exercise wisdom that results from a reverential fear and respect for God as the one who is the Sovereign Lord of all.  If you want to make a positive contribution to your family and society, that’s where you must start.  Only when we have this reverential fear and respect for God as the Sovereign Lord of all will this happen.
