Why is it often difficult to remember what God has said?  You would think the disciples and those closely associated with Jesus would remember His repeated words about His death and resurrection.

It seems His death shattered their dreams and hopes.  In Luke 24 the words of the angel at the tomb illustrate this tendency to forget: “Why do you look for the living among the dead?  He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you... ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’”  Only then did they remember his words.

God’s word often makes sense only after the event where it was needed.  Hindsight is clearer than foresight.  What stability God’s word would provide if we only remembered and trusted it as we face situations.

When the women returned to where the disciples were hiding and told them what they experienced, it says, “They did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.”  They too didn’t remember.  Even after the two Emmaus disciples reported their encounter with Jesus, there was still doubt.  Only after Jesus appeared to them did they believe.

The word “remember” in this portion of God’s word is an insight word.  It highlights an important truth and helps you understand the portion.  Look for such words in your reading.  You’ll find it helpful.  Never forget what stability God’s word provides if we but remember and trust it as we face difficult decisions.
