In our last visit we saw that a phrase repeated 4 times in Psalm 107 helps us understand what the Psalmist is trying to communicate.  In each case he describes people in different circumstances.

Some, verses 4-9, were wandering in desert wastelands, not finding a way to a city to settle in, lost and in desperate straits.  When they cried out to God He delivered them from their distress, and led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.

Others, verses 10-16, were prisoners, in darkest gloom.  They were in this state because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.  When they cried out to God He saved them, brought them out of their darkness and gloom and broke their chains.

A third group, verses 17-22, identified as fools, who through rebellion brought themselves to death’s door.  When they cried out to God He saved them, gave them His word and rescued them from the grave.

The fourth group, verses 22-42, went on an adventure, but soon found themselves in a storm so perilous their courage melted away.  At wits’ end they cried out to God who brought them out of their distress, stilled the storm and guided them to their desired haven.

In each case, whether their negative circumstances were self-inflicted or innocently encountered, when they cried out to God He answered.  Whenever we face difficulty, we would be wise to cry out to God and count on His unfailing love to intervene so we might experience His deliverance and will for us.
