There’s probably nothing more painful than the rejection of one whom you thought was a close friend.  And if you’re a Christian, it’s even worse, if that close friend is a Christian.

Listen to what the psalmist says in Psalm 55, verse 12.  “If an enemy were insulting me I could endure it.”  You anticipate that an enemy might insult you.  They might act in a way that’s very hurtful.  But you can endure that.  You half expect it.  “If a foe were raising himself against me I could hide from him.”  I can anticipate what a foe might do, and prepare myself.

But when it involves a friend, I usually find I’m more vulnerable.  That’s a part of the dynamic of friendship.  Listen to what the psalmist says beginning in verse 13, “But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng in the house of God.”

This describes someone with whom you had an intimate relationship; one who was trustworthy; one who was a real companion; one who spent time in the presence of God together with you talking about serious things; one in whom you had great confidence.  Then, all of a sudden they insult you, they raise themselves up against you.  They reject you.  Oh, how painful this is.

How do you cope when this happens?  I’d suggest you turn to verses 16, 17 and 22 of Psalm 55.  The psalmist encourages you to call on the Lord on a regular basis and cast your care upon Him because He cares for you and will sustain you.  He always is a faithful, reliable friend.
