As we’ve seen in Job 38-41 there was a spiritual storm raging in and around Job.  He stammers and stumbles in expressing an apology to God for trying to give a defense of his actions.  Listen to Job 40:4-5, “I am unworthy – how can I reply to you?  I put my hand over my mouth.  I spoke once, but I have no answer – twice, but I will say no more.”

Then the Lord again speaks to Job out of the storm in Job 40:6 through chapter 41. When God finishes speaking Job again responds in humility and brokenness.  Listen to Job 42:2-6: “I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted.  You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?’  Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.  You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’  My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.  Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

He was a broken man, humbled before God.  But that was necessary for him to break through to an even more vital relationship with God than he had ever known.  All the tests led to this spiritual test, and it led to Job understanding what God requires to be blessed by Him: Don’t justify self.  Humble yourself and Repent.  Trust in God’s grace.  Endure whatever God sends or allows.  It might be painful.  You might not get support from others.  You might feel driven to despair.  Hang in there and listen for what God is trying to teach you, in and through it all.
