As I read the book of Esther I came away with the strong sense that the focus of the book was on making wise decisions.  Knowing that it’s important to make wise decisions, however, can put an unnecessary burden on our shoulders.  Fear of failure could cripple us.

We always need to keep in mind that God is in control of our world.  Nothing surprises Him.  He never feels cornered when the events of our world seem to careen down a treacherous, devastating path.  With that undergirding conviction and confidence we can make decisions, even tough decisions, with courage, wisdom and patience.

These characteristics amplify the wise decision Esther made.  It took courage to go into the king’s presence uninvited.  This was against the law Chapter 4:16.  Esther risked death.  But she was in a position with the greatest potential for success.  God knows how to put you into the right position for just such a time.  She had the wisdom to call on God’s people to fast and pray while she with her servants would join them.  This spiritual under-girding was a significant element in her courage.

When the king responded favorably to her, she wisely was patient in implementing her plan and presenting her request.  Patience is so important when God begins to open the door of opportunity.  Often when we see a crack in the door we rush forward and get in God’s way rather than be patient, giving Him time to do His thing.  How beautifully Esther demonstrated these characteristics as she made wise decisions.
