1 John 4:4 declares, “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” The Old Testament equivalent is found in 2 Kings 6:16, “Don’t be afraid.  Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”  These are impact statements that grab your attention and are readily understood and remembered.  Always check the context to be sure you’re not missing the point.

The context in 2 Kings 6 tells us enemy forces surrounded Elisha’s house.  When his servant saw them the next morning he was shaken and rushed in to tell Elisha.  The prophet declared, “Don’t be afraid.  Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”  Then he prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.”  When his eyes were opened, “he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”  It was obvious: spiritual forces were protecting them.

The enemy troops didn’t see them, so proceeded toward Elisha’s home.  He prayed, “Strike these people with blindness.”  God did and Elisha led this army right into Samaria.  When God opened their eyes in answer to Elisha’s prayer they were trapped.  Elisha told the Israeli commanders to feed them and send them back to their homes.  This ended their raids of Israel’s territory.

If you feel overwhelmed by the enemy or circumstances, remember Elisha’s impact statement: “Don’t be afraid.  Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”  Or the NT equivalent: “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
