Misused privilege is the greatest of tragedies.  This impact thought developed in my mind and heart as I read the book of 1 Kings.  If you’re reading through the Bible with us over the next two years you should be at 1 Kings now.   If you have questions while reading and studying the Bible email me, ludgolz@outlook.com.

I believe 1 Kings 11:4 illustrates the impact thought well: Misused privilege is the greatest of tragedies.  It says, “As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.”

God made Solomon a wise man.  Everything he put his hands to prospered.  At first he used his assets wisely, but soon God’s gifts became more important to him than God Himself.  Solomon became careless, and before he knew it he failed.  His many wives, who worshipped false gods, led him into idolatry.  What Solomon started, his successors in the divided kingdom continued, plunging Israel down to utter ruin.

Whenever we put God’s gifts before God Himself we reap the poverty of the perishable and experience the doom of God’s rejection.  Always remember: God demands first place, for He is a jealous God.  Keep this impact thought in mind as you read 1 Kings – Misused privilege is the greatest of tragedies.  See it illustrated over and over again.
