Whenever we celebrate the accomplishments of great people we should always take a second look. It’s been said, “Behind every great man is a woman.” In David’s case it could be said, “Behind this great man were other men, mighty men.”
The prophets Samuel and Nathan played a significant role in his life. Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a powerful influence. 2 Samuel 23 lists the names of David’s mighty men. The military feats of these men were amazing in themselves, but they were devoted supporters of David.
They were loyal, almost to a fault. Once, David longed for water while staked out in a cave, waiting to attack the enemy. Wistfully he said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” That’s where the enemy was encamped. Three of these mighty men risked their lives, breaking through the enemy lines, drawing water from the well, and then bringing it back to David. When David realized they had risked their lives to satisfy his thirst, he took the water and poured it out before the Lord. In this way he affirmed their loyalty and praised God for having such men to support him in his ventures.
Anyone could do great things if surrounded by a band of such mighty men or women. It would be wise for all of us to recognize the importance of having some close, supportive friends who can help us in times of need and provide encouragement and accountability at all times. Ask God for such friends and then affirm those God provides.
